On a recent visit to Orbost we stopped by the visitors information centre, which is housed in an original slab hut. The slab hut is one of the original authentic settlers huts, this hut was built in 1872 as a family dwelling, no nails were used in it's construction it was held together with wire. The original site of the hut was on Yalmy Road about 40 kms from it's present site in Orbost. The hut was donated to the Orbost Historical Society. In 1970 the removal and storage of the hut took place, each piece of timber was numbered and photographed, no small job. The hut was finely rebuilt in 1984 in the main street of Orbost and became the home of the visitors information centre and gift shop. I enjoyed my visit to the hut the lady's on duty were a wealth of information.
