The Goldfields region of central Victoria covers many areas where gold was discovered and sparked the gold rush of the 1850's and 1860's. Many relics from the gold rush days remain today and are protected by the state and national parks, including old mines, tunnels, diggings sites, abandoned machinery and mine building ruins. Tourism is now a very important industry to many former gold mining towns where the old mining relics allow visitors to reconnect with our gold mining past.
